Six Activities:
1. Open Mind
2. Venn Diagram
3. Chapter Names
4. Poem
5. Sociogram
6. 8-10 Songs

1. Open Mind- Can not be shown- I chose to make and open mind because I enjoy to draw, even though I am not very good at it, and the open mind was a project that I could express how I thought one character from the book was like. I choose to do Paul because he was the main character, so I knew a lot about him, and I could draw more pictures if I did him.

2. Venn Diagram- Can not be shown- I have decided to make and draw the venn diagram because it was drawing. I chose to draw about Paul and Himmelstoss because they are very different, so it made that section really easy to do. The similarities were a bit harder because I had to spend more time going through the book and looking up what I thought was similar about them.

3. Chapter Names- I chose to name all of the chapters because I thought it would be the easiest activity. However, when I started trying to make up titles, I found it difficult to come up with a good name. This project was harder than I thought it to be because I did not want to make up an obvious title. I wanted a title that fit thw whole chapter, and a title that was meaning ful to the chapter.

Chapter 1: Good Times; I have decided to name this chapter this name because in chapter 1 it is a good day. The men get doubled the food, they get letters from home, and the get a day of rest.

Chapter 2: Kemmerich; I have decided to name this chapter after one of the characters because the chapter is based on his death, and hoe Muller wanted his boots.

Chapter 3: Training Camp; I named this chapter this because they tell their story on how they jumped Himmelstoss, when they were in camp. They also tell why they do not like him anymore.

Chapter 4: Moaning of the World; I named this chapter after one of the phrases in the book. This quote jumped out on me when I was reading through the book, and it fit the title, since they had a bombardment. This quote refers to the horses crying.

Chapter 5: Goose Feathers; This chapter talked about when Paul and Kat went to get food, and they killed geese. This fits the title because the goose chase was similar to the war scenes.

Chapter 6: Chance; I named the chapter Chance because they talk about how war is only by chance you live through it because you never know where a bomb or gun is going to hit. I thought this was very true, and agreed with it.

Chapter 7: On Leave; In this chapter, Paul gets to go on leave to go home. This is basically what the whole chapter’s settings were on, so this title fit the chapter.

Chapter 8: Prisoners; I named this chapter Prisoners because in the chapter, Paul relized that the Russian prisoners were just normal people fighting in war like him, praying everyday that they do not die.

Chapter 9: Kaiser; I named the chapter that because the army got new clothes, and tried to make the trench look nicer, and more prepared for a bombardment when the Kaiser came to the front.

Chapter 10: Dying Room; In this chapter, the men are at a church to recover from their injuries, and they talk about the dying room, and when some one goes in, they don’t come out, but one person said he would come out, and he eventually did come back.

Chapter 11: Summer of 1918; I named this chapter that because the part of the chapter that I remember the most is when they were talking about the summer of 1918. They went into detail on why it was the worst summer, and the bloodiest summer, so I thought it was appropriate to call it that.

Chapter 12: In the End; I called this chapter this because it is a short chapter, and all it is saying is how Paul feels in the end of the war. It talks about what they will do after the war, and how Paul feels nothing anymore, just emptiness.

4. Poem- In the beginning of the project, I was not planning on doing the poem because I am not the best poem writer. I changed my mind on one of the other activities, so then I decided to do the poem. When I started writing the poem I did not know how it would turn out, but I think that it turned out to be really good. The poem was not as hard as I originally thought it would be, and it turned out to be pretty easy.

Death, Pain, Suffering

All is quiet on the western front
Everything I know is far from gone
Death, pain, suffering
The three elements of my emotions
Love, trust, compassion
Distant memories that fade readily
Do or die- Don’t hold back
In war, feelings are only walls that can be easily demolished
All is quiet on the western front
We could be brothers, but they’d never want us to know that
Friends or enemies- It’s not up to us to decide
Three easy stabs to the chest
And a good man’s life is put to rest
Again – Death, pain, suffering
It’s everything I know – It’s everything I feel
All is quiet on the western front

5. Sociogram- I chose to do the sociogram, again because I thought it would be easy. When I started, it was, but when the more in deepth questions started to come up, I found myself struggling to find the answers in the book. This sociogram helped me tremendously find out more about Paul, because when I read everything does not stick in my head. After doing this activity, all of Paul's information was much easier to remember.

Name: Paul Baumer
Age: 18
Occupation Before War: A student.
Friends: Kat, Detering, Kropp, Kemmerich, Muller, and Leer
Family: Mom- has cancer
Sister-takes care of his mom
Dad- keep Paul from going back to war
Accomplishments: Living the longer than his friends in the war.
Known for: Paul was known for being a good friend, and for being kind.
Quotes (3):
1. “It’s unendurable. It is the moaning of the world, it is the martyred creation, wild with anguish, filled with terror, and groaning,” (pg. 62).
I chose this quote for Paul because this was the quote that stuck out at me the most throughout the whole project. The part where it says ‘moaning of the world’ is when horses were crying, from getting hit.
2. “It is just as much a matter of chance that I am still alive as that I might have been hit…No soldier outlives a thousand chances. But every soldier believes in Chance and trusts his luck,” (pg. 101).
This was another quote that I liked during the novel because chance is a lot if life. Chance is what we pass by everyday. Like in a game of poker, it is chance that gives you your cards.
3. “The summer of 1918 is the most bloody and the most terrible. The days stand like angels in blue and gold, incomprehensible, above the ring of annihilation,” (pg. 284).
This quote was another quote that I liked. This quote is very depressing, but then it is interesting simile that Paul made about angels in blue and gold.

6. 8-10 Songs- I chose to do this activity because it was an easy one to do. I know how to download songs, and put them on blank CD's. In this activity, it was difficult to find songs that related to the story, but I think that my songs match to the novel, and tell a different story at the same time.

1. One Last Breath-Creed
2. Disappear- Hoobastank
3. Do or Die- Papa Roach
4. Peace on Earth-U2
5. Ammunition- Switchfoot
6. Meant to Live- Switchfoot
7. You're Not Alone Tonight- Keith Urban
8. Somebody's Someone- Lonestar

One Last Breath- Creed
I picked this because it talked about having one last breath.

Please come now
I think I'm falling
I'm holding on to
All I think is safe
It seems I found
The road to nowhere
And I'm trying to escape
I yelled back when
I heard thunder
But I'm down to
One last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say
Hold me now
I'm six feet
From the edge
And I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

I'm looking down
Now that it's over
Reflecting on
All of my mistakes
I thought I found
The road to somewhere
Somewhere in His grace

I cried out
"Heaven save me"
But I'm down to
One last breath
And with it let me say
Let me say

Hold me now
I'm six feet
From the edge
And I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

Sad eyes follow me
But I still believe
There's something left for me
So please come
Stay with me
'Cause I still believe there's
Something left
For you and me
For you and me
For you and me

Hold me now
I'm six feet
From the edge
And I'm thinking

Disappear- Hoobastank
I picked this song because it is talking about people disappearing, and pain.

There's a pain that sleeps inside
It sleeps with just one eye
And awakens the moment that you're near
Though I try to look away
The pain it still remains
Only leaving when you're next to me

Do you know, that everytime you're near
Everybody else seems far away
So can you come and make them disappear
Make them disappear and we can stay

So I stand and look around
Distracted by the sounds
Of everyone and everything I see
And I search through every face
Without a single trace, of the person
The person that I need

Do you know, Everybody else seems far away
So can you come and make them disappear
Make them disappear and we can stay

Can you make them disappear?
Make them disappear

There's a pain that sleeps inside
Sleeps with just one eye
And awakens, the moment that you're near
And I search through every face
Without a single trace, of the person
The person that I need

Do you know, that everytime you're near
Everybody else seems far away
So can you come and make them disappear
Make them disappear and we can stay that everytime you're near

Do or Die- Papa Roach
I picked this song because of the name. In war it was either do or die trying.

Today I saw my hero fall apart,
the one who taught me to be strong,
on the outside I look fine,
but on the inside I am dying
my strength has overcome my pain
my love for you remains the same
the loneliness is setting in
I have no one to free my sins

It's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's do or die
it's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's your to mine

Now it's my time to help you out,
coz you were there when I was down,
it's hard for me to seal this way
losing all your sanity
you helped me, keep my dreams alive ,
without you how would I survive
it's time for me to be a man
now I finally understand

It's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's do or die
it's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's your to mine

It's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's do or dieit's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's your to mine

I cant run anymore
I cant hide anymore
I cant run anymore
I cant hide anymore

Today I saw my hero fall apart,
the one who taught me to be strong,
on the outside I look fine,
but on the inside I am dying

It's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's do or die
it's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's your to mine

It's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's do or die
it's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's your to mine

It's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's do or die
it's never too late to live your life,
the time is now, it's your to mine

I cant run anymore
I cant hide anymore
I cant run anymore
I cant hide anymore

Yeaaaahh

Peace on Earth- U2
I also picked this song because of the name. People wanted peace on Earth.

Heaven on Earth
We need it now
I'm sick of all of this
Hanging around

Sick of sorrow
I'm sick of the pain
I'm sick of hearing
Again and again
That there's gonna be
Peace on Earth

Where I grew up
There weren't many trees
Where there was we'd tear them down
And use them on our enemies

They say that what you mock
Will surely overtake you
And you become a monster
So the monster will not break you

And it's already gone too far
You said that if you go in hard
You won't get hurt

Jesus can you take the time
To throw a drowning man a line
Peace on Earth

Tell the ones who hear no sound
Whose sons are living in the ground
Peace on Earth

No who's or why's
No one cries like a mother cries
For peace on Earth
She never got to say goodbye
To see the color in his eyes
Now he's in the dirt
Peace on Earth

They're reading names out
Over the radio
All the folks the rest of us
Won't get to know

Sean and Julia
Gareth, Anne, and Breeda
Their lives are bigger than
Any big idea

Jesus can you take the time
To throw a drowning man a line
Peace on Earth

To tell the ones who hear no sound
Whose sons are living in the ground
Peace on Earth

Jesus in the song you wrote
The words are sticking in my throat
Peace on Earth

Hear it every Christmas time
But hope and history won't rhyme
So what's it worth

This peace on Earth
Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth
Peace on Earth

Ammunition- Switchfoot
I picked this song because it is not related to war, but if you read it. it talks about blowing up and things like that.

Blame it on what you're into
Blame it on your religions
Blame it on politicians

We've been blowing up
We're the issue
It's our condition

We've been blowing up
We're the issue
Our detonation

We've been blowing up
We're the issue
We're ammunition
We're ammunition
We're ammunition
We are the fuse and ammunition

I have no generation
Shoe me my motivation
One world one desperation
One hope and one salvation

Look what a mess we've made of love
Look waht a mess we've made
We've got ourselves to blame
Look what a bomb we made of love

Meant to Live- Switchfoot
I picked this song because I thought of the solders' meaining to live for more than war.

Fumbling his confidence
And wond'ring why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he's meant for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly, fly

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

Dreaming about Providence
And whether mice or men have second tries
Maybe we've been livin with our eyes half open
Maybe we're bent and broken, broken

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

We want more than this world's got to offer
We want more than this world's got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live
We were meant to live

You’re Not Alone Tonight- Keith Urban
I picked this song because t talks about hard times, and then having someone there to be with. In war this someone was friends.

We all drink to forget
Some of us more than most
When reality gets too real
And the fires of hell to close
But I'm here to let you know that
That you can make it through
If you believe that someone is watchin' over you

And call it an angel
Call it a muse
And call it karma that you've got comin' to you
What's the difference
What's in name
What matters most is never ever losin' faith
'Cause it's gonna be alright
You're not alone tonight

We all have our days
When nothing goes as planned
Not a soul in the world
Seems to understand
And for someone to talk to
You'd give anything
Well go on and cry out loud

'Cause someone's listenin'

Yeah, and call it an angel
Call it a muse
And call it karma that you've got comin' to you
What's the difference
What's in name
What matters most is never ever losin' faith
'Cause it's gonna be alright
You're not alone tonight

Keep your faith alive
You're not the only one

Yeah, and call it an angel
Call it a muse
Call it karma that you've got comin' to you
What's the difference
What's in name
What matters most is never ever losin' faith
Yeah, you're gonna be alright
You're not alone tonight

Oh you can cry if you want to, go on

Somebody’s Someone- Lonestar
I picked this song because it talks about someone dying in war.

Turn to the six o'clock news, another soldier dies
Tried to hide it but I couldn't help it, I had to cry
When my little boy asked me daddy was he your friend
I said no, I didn't even know him

But he was somebody's someone, a neighbor, a husband
A brother, a father, and a mother's only son
He was an uncle, a cousin, somebody's best friend
And I'm sure at times a shoulder to lean on
He was somebody's someone

So I sat there in that chair and helped him understand
How this brave young man gave his life for our land
And although he's someone we'll never know
To you and me he is a hero
He was somebody's someone, a neighbor, a husband
A brother, a father, and a mother's only son
He was an uncle, a cousin, somebody's best friend
And I'm sure at times a shoulder to lean on
He was somebody's someone

To the world he was a total stranger
Who kept us safe and out of danger
But now he's just a picture on TV
Somebody's memory

He was somebody's someone, a neighbor, a husband
A brother, a father, and a mother's only son
He was an uncle, a cousin, somebody's best friend
And I'm sure at times a shoulder to lean on
He was somebody's someone
He was somebody's someone
